Why We Teach Design Thinking and Entrepreneurship to Pre-schoolers
I am often asked if entrepreneurship can be taught. The honest answer? Partly.
The core instincts—guts, tenacity, and tolerating the stomach-churning uncertainty of a startup—feel mostly like nature. I didn’t know I had it in me until my Silicon Valley years, when I was naive enough to say yes to building something. That part is hard to teach in a classroom.
But the process of turning an idea into a product, and a product into a business? That is highly teachable. There is a world-class methodology for it, formalized at Stanford: Design Thinking. Today, it drives global giants like Apple, IBM, and IDEO.
What surprises parents is that you can teach this exact methodology to a four-year-old. We have been doing it at ChildFirst for years.
Design thinking is a human-centered innovation loop with five moves:
1. Empathize: Observe someone's problem.
2. Define: Frame the issue clearly.
3. Ideate: Brainstorm multiple solutions.
4. Prototype: Build a rough version.
5. Test: Gather feedback and iterate.
Our K1 and K2 children learn these exact steps. A project might be fixing a toy, reducing classroom waste, or adapting art tools for a left-handed classmate. The project changes; the execution loop remains identical. They observe, define, brainstorm (the wilder the better), build using recycled cardboard, watch it fail, and iterate.
The physical product is rarely the point. The real value lies in the lifelong mental dispositions it builds:
• The habit of actively noticing problems instead of walking past them.
• The comfort of generating ten ideas before picking one.
• The resilience to build a rough version and let it fail in front of peers.
• The patience to improve rather than abandon.
We pair this with entrepreneurship exercises. For market day, children plan mini-businesses, design posters, and learn basic pricing and value creation. By pitching ideas, they discover what it means to build something people actually want.
Most preschoolers won't start companies. The goal is the cognitive wiring. By Primary 1, the loop of see a problem, propose a solution, build, test, improve becomes a default mental reflex—not a business school course at 22.
In the AI era, this matters more than ever. As AI absorbs routine tasks, the professionals who thrive will be the ones asking the original question: What problem is worth solving, and what does a great solution look like? This judgment is what every professional will need.
