The few small studies that have been conducted suffer from serious methodological problems: tiny sample sizes, no random assignment, no baseline comparisons, and little control for differences between classrooms or teachers. One often-cited study of second graders found marginally better mathematics outcomes in the homework group, but the sample was just 39 students and the researchers themselves acknowledged the results required far larger investigation before any conclusions could be drawn.
Correlational research, meaning studies that simply observe whether children who do homework tend to perform better, presents a similar problem. Children who consistently complete homework tend to be children who already have stronger academic preparation, more parental support at home, and greater compliance in the classroom. The logic runs that an evening assignment gives children a second exposure to the day’s lesson. But here too the science is more nuanced. Studies of first and second graders have found that children in this age group learned most effectively from brief, well-spaced sessions, with no more than one meaningful lesson per topic per day. Piling additional cognitive load onto a child who has already spent six or seven hours at school is more likely to produce fatigue and resistance than genuine consolidation.
Young children also do not arrive home from school in the same cognitive state they were in at 8 a.m. A pre-schooler at 6 p.m. is running on a depleted fuel tank. The mental focus required to complete a structured assignment is simply not available in the same way it was during the school day, when the child had a teacher present, a structured lesson, and the natural social energy of peers around them. Expecting the same output in a very different environment, without those scaffolds, sets children up for frustration rather than learning.
